Scholarships & Teaching Assistantships

Since 1989, the Birmingham Law School has appointed up to six Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PTAs) a year. Applications are welcome from well-qualified graduates working in any field of law.

PTAs take up their positions on or soon after 1 September. PTAs are students working towards a PhD who carry out up to 75 hours of small group teaching of undergraduates on our LLB programmes. The School provides the following financial benefits for its PTAs:

  • Payment of fees for the period of registration (up to a maximum of the current home/EU student rate), normally not exceeding three years
  • Payment of £12,300 pa (from 2008/09); this figure is made up of an annual maintenance grant (£10,260) as well as payment for small group teaching (£2,040)

Research scholarships

Birmingham Law School offers up to 8 further research scholarships, up to a maximum of £5,000 each, to contribute towards tuition fees and maintenance. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need.
